Mentoring

Win/win.

One of the hallmarks of a traditional law practice is the apprentice/mentor relationship. Most people only see the benefits to the apprentice, not the mentor. At Goodwin Procter, effective mentoring is a two-way street, and an essential part of our culture. We’ve created more opportunities for better mentoring relationships through interactive staffing protocols, practice area meetings, and other programs. Mentors can request to work with specific associates. As a result, our mentors usually invest more time in the mentoring process and develop strong partnerships with their associates. Associates receive effective coaching because our mentors are more engaged in career development. We evaluate our mentoring program regularly to ensure that everyone involved benefits from the experience. We also work with external coaches to ensure attorneys are developing the professional skills needed to advance in their careers.

"Every two weeks the attorneys and partners get together for a brown bag lunch. It’s an open forum discussion that’s invaluable to me as a mid-level associate."
